The Oshawa Legion Pipe Band.
The Branch 43 Pipe Band began as the Caledonia Pipe Band under the leadership of Neil MacRae Sr. who presided over the Band for twenty-six years. The pipers and drummers wore the MacRae Tartan. In honour of the MacRae family, the drummers continue to wear this tartan. The pipers are presently wearing the Royal Stewart Tartan.
Neil MacRae Jr. took over as Pipe Major and held the position until 1985 when illness forced his retirement. The band was on the brink of dissolving but thanks to a handful of dedicated Legion pipers and much needed financial assistance from the branch membership, the band regained strength and new members joined, giving us the strong, successful band the Legion enjoys today.
Mal Knocker became Drum Major and Doug Saltzman, the Pipe Major in 1996. lan Frazer joined forces shortly after and was appointed Pipe Sergeant. Doug and lan brought along much needed experience and talent and the rest is history. lan Frazer took over the position of Pipe Major upon Doug's retirement.
The band has participated in approximately 20 parades and festivals per year during the past 8 years. They led the Fiesta Parade and Oshawa Santa Claus Parades for the past 25 years.
At present our band consists of 24 members, working for a common goal, a non-competitive but superb first-class band.
