The Brighton Legion Highlanders
The band was formed in 1967 by three Brighton residents: Norm Jackson, Alex Howie and Order of Canada recipient Scotty Broughton.
Since then the band has taught hundreds of young pipers and drummers, performing in countless parades and gatherings through out Ontario, Quebec and New York and has been in competition from Dennison Armory to Glasgow Green.
In 1995 under Pipe Major Fred Carmichael, Brighton joined the PPBSO competition circuit, competing in Grade 4, and won the Canadian championship in Cambridge, Ontario. The following year the band won the North American Championships at Maxville and went on to win the Ontario Championships & the “Beer Tent” competition at Fergus. By the end of the 1996 season the Brighton Legion Highlanders had amassed the largest point standing in grade 4 history, to win the 1996 Gr. 4 Champion Supreme Pipe Band award, along with two Champion Supreme Bass awards.
In 1997 the Band traveled to Glasgow Green for the world Pipe Band Championships and tied for 12th in grade 3, competing in a field of 60 bands!
Over the past ten years under the leadership of Pipe Sergeant Kathy MacDonald, Drum Sergeant Roger MacDonald and the return of competition Pipe Major Fred Carmichael a whole new generation of pipers and drummers are getting ready to hit the competition field!
